Leading on from my wedding trend predictions I wanted to use today's post to expand on one of the predictions that received the most feedback…mismatched bridesmaid dresses.
It's no secret that I have always been a fan of the mismatched look. The main reasons being that mismatched dresses can add a real WOW factor and that they ideally allow each bridesmaid to wear a dress that suits their skin tone, body shape, hair colour, hair cut etc…creating a happy bridesmaid and therefore a happy bride. Put simply, mismatched dresses are a simple solution to the bridesmaid dress dilemma.
BUT the mismatched look doesn't always work and can cause more headaches than if you had gone down the more traditional bridesmaid dress route.
Today, in addition to some mismatched mood board inspiration, I want to share with you my top tips and insights on how to successfully mismatch bridesmaid dresses.

1. Start off by deciding how you want to mismatch your dresses. Options can include…
Same colour, different shades.
Same colour, different styles (including different materials, textures and patterns).
Same style, different colours / shades.
Same dress, different styles.
Same dress, different colours / shades.
Same theme (i.e. whimsical), different colours / styles / shades.
2. If you are planning on having your bridesmaids in different colours / shades then before you start shopping have an idea in mind about the best colour combinations that fit the style and vision of your day. A great starting point would be to look at websites like The Perfect Palette or Pantone for colour palette guidance and inspiration.
3. If your bridesmaids are choosing their dresses independently then make sure you provide them with guidelines. Give them as much direction as possible (i.e. do you want them in long or short dresses, sleeves or no sleeves) without making the experience too stressful. Also remember to give them guidance on what you don’t want them to wear in order to avoid any last minute panics. Once they’ve found a dress that they think fits your brief then get them to send you an image (ideally of them in the dress) and compare this to any other images you have or mood boards you have created prior to them buying the dress.
4. Remember that you still want your bridesmaids to look like your bridal party and therefore you should try to coordinate an element of their wedding day look, whether this be matching bouquets, shoes, accessories, hair styles and so on. It is these coordinated elements that will help tie together the mismatched dresses and create the perfect mismatched look.
